What about when the state is the church?

Once again, I find it interesting that in the name of God, Iranian leaders conclude that their interpretation of their scriptures gives them license to suppress people using methods very much like the Shah. What we are seeing in Iran is an example of why American founding father separated religion and state. What we are witnessing is what happens when a population is mobilized insufficient numbers by clever politicians who are fearful of losing power. That’s why they want to inflict physical pain out of sheer hatred.

Comment: People continue to allow cruel and despotic leaders to use hatred to stay in power? None of those brave demonstrators are doing so to overthrow the religion. Like them, I will not be suppressed by a religion so afraid of what I might choose to believe that they will harm me to make me believe, nor does God or Allah expect me to. That is 80-99% why there is heaven and hell! Do you agree?

Religious Groups Respond to Flu Outbreak

As the World Health Organization warned that the swine flu outbreak may become a worldwide epidemic, religious leaders mobilized to try to keep worshippers safe. Catholic masses were canceled in Mexico City, where people prayed for an end to the crisis. Here in the US, churches in Texas and elsewhere encouraged sick parishioners to stay home

Comment: This seems to indicate that the church knows it has no power to protect its parishioners.

Methodists Uphold Ban on Same-Sex Marriages; Presbyterians Reject Openly Gay Clergy

Same-sex couples started getting married in Iowa this week. A state Supreme Court decision last month allowed gay marriage there. But United Methodist clergy won’t be performing any of those ceremonies, at least not officially. The denomination’s high court upheld a ban against presiding over same-sex unions, even if those unions are recognized

Comment: One would think the church would not be able to condone the union between a man and a woman as being more than a partnership according to the Bible. Do you agree?
