About The Author
My name is Mel Reed. I am an African-Cherokee-Caucasian American and my life is a testimonial to the power of God.
1956-59 – In 1956 I left Pine Plains High School without a high school diploma and entered the service. Based on an Army IQ test, I was given training in heating, ventilating & air conditioning. I served a year in Greenland. I was discharged in 1959.
1960-1961 – In 1960, I re-entered the service and based on the same test above administered at Fort Dix NJ. I was assigned to the Army Military Attaché office. Because of my race, a Col Williams immediately re-assigned me to the Army Assistant Chief of Staff for intelligence in the Pentagon. From there I was reassigned to an Army post office unit in Geissen, Germany. After an ugly racial incident in Frankfurt, I was given a General Discharge in 1961.
1962-1993 – In 1963, I was hired by IBM in 1963, resigned to go into my own business and was rehired in 1975, was re-hired and retired on March 31, 1993. During my 27 years with IBM, I held various positions. Job titles included manager, quality engineer and systems and procedures analyst. One of my assignments made me responsible for all field mainframe circuit board removals used in system alterations, worldwide. I earned “consistently exceeds requirements” ratings for 11 of the 14 years I served in a professional level position. My education consisted of a 2 year Associate Degree from LaSalle Extension University I saw on the back of a book of matches and self study, proving that many people can perform in capacities they do not think they are capable of because I am not an “exception to the rule”. I am a human being. In 1977-81, I wrote a vocational training program in conjunction with Opportunities for Industrialization Centers, funded by HUD C.E.T.A. title VI funds. In February, 1981, I set out to write about how we started the program with an initial grant of only $75,000. After we enrolled 80 students in classes held in the basement of St Francis AME Zion church in Port Chester, NY; a miracle happened in February, 1981, that changed my life.
In 1997, I was also ordained by Mount Zion Church of God, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Since then, I have been consumed with establishing another larger program in Charlotte , NC , and completing this book. As a result of these activities, I’ve not been an active member of the church and have lost my license.
In conclusion, this site is the product of what God gave me. I do not know why HE chose me, but I am grateful on behalf of all those who suffered and sacrificed for my sake, that HE did!
